Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, New Jersey
Barring some amazing new developments, Newark Mayor Cory Booker is going to be the Democratic nominee for the special Senate election this year. A week out from the primary Booker holds a massive lead over the rest of the field, according to Quinnipiac.
According to the poll, Booker currently has 54 percent of the likely Democratic primary vote. His closest rival, Rep. Frank Pallone, is at only 17 percent. Rep. Rush Holt stands at 15 percent, and State Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver gets only 5 percent. Among likely voters, only 8 percent remain undecided.
Booker’s lead is effectively unbeatable with so little time left. Even if two of the other candidates were to drop out and endorse the third, Booker would still likely win the nomination easily.
The poll also found that Steve Lonegan should win the Republican primary. According to the poll, he currently stands at 73 percent, while Alieta Eck its at only 10 percent.
Assuming he wins the primary, Booker is the overwhelming favorite in the general election. In a matchup against Lonegan Booker leads 54 percent to 29 percent.
